Cardiac Rehab
Cardiac rehabilitation
Cardiac rehabilitation is a type of rehabilitation designed for individuals who have a cardiac condition or disease. This can include health education, advice on cardiovascular risk reduction, physical activity and stress management.
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is one of the most common cardiac condition and a cause of high mortality rate. Multidisciplinary cardiac rehabilitation is recognized as an integral component for patients with cardiovascular disease and can help reduce mortality rate and reduce the risk of recurrent cardiac events.
Cardiac rehabilitation is comprehensive, long term programmes involving medical evaluation and exercise prescription. This type of rehabilitation is highly recommended, according to international guidelines. Exercise training conducted by physiotherapist constitutes an important part of recovery. An individualized exercise prescription incorporates aerobic and resistance training, warm-up, cool-down, and flexibility exercise, with progressive updating of the exercise prescription as clinical status change.
Therapeutic exercises aim to improve exercise habits and exercise tolerance. The main goal is to increase physical recovery after a cardiac event and ultimately improving lifestyle, functional independence, quality of life and psychological well-being.
